Brrrr! Fall and winter generally bring us looser, more "undone" looks. And while some of that is true this year, it’s not all windblown. With the reemergence of Old Hollywood styles, expect to see more polished looks. The “just rolled out of bed” look that's been popular for nearly a decade for men is shifting towards longer, more groomed styles. AMC’s, Mad Men, is partially to blame for this. Products to achieve this look include heavier, stronger-holding gels, pomades and mousses that provide more shine and less volume. For a variety of reasons, women styles are generally shorter in the f/w – we can’t leave the house with wet hair in cold weather, it takes too much time to blowdry, etc - and this year is no exception. Since crops, inverted bobs and pixies are so versatile, they can be created for nearly any facial shape. F/w is the perfect time to chop the locks for those of you who have been talking about it for the least year. F/w is all about extremes: blondes go brunette, we lose length, we get fringe, it’s hot then cold and so on. That’s why it’s such a great time to make a change! The Color In... Color trends right now are pretty standard: pastel blondes, rich brunettes and contemporary reds for the rage. No big surprises. BUT, f/w is can be brutal on your color. The cold, dry air expands and contracts your hair (like pavement) and loosens the cuticle, dropping color. Protecting your hair during the winter months is crucial. Invest in products that will work with the weather. Hydrating shampoos and conditioners, deep conditioning treatments and crème-based styling aids are generally better in drier weather. Probably the most common word you’re hearing this season related to hair is fringe. But what separates the fringe from this year from last is definitely length. The theme this year? Big, broad and long. Think Nico, long and Pacific broad. Big, big, big fringe... Have a wonderful holiday season and keep your locks in shape! |
